First off 1/2" plywqod isn't 1/2" anymore, its all thinner. The suggestions on the plans for building jigs are just that, suggestions, use what works. The material lists for the boat itself though should be followed more closely.

I like plywood for the forms, but the laminated pine that John uses would be great, though expensive. Some swear by particle board, I don't like working with it.

MDF if you can find it might be ok, but it tends to split when you staple into it. Again if you can find it, MDO I like a lot, it's got nice surfaces to draw on and tends to be a better material than general plywood.

MDO = Medium Density Overlay (I think) (it's designed for signs, so is usually decent in quality and not real expensive)

MDF = Medium Density Fiberboard
