Having a cabinet saw in my shop, I would differ on the purpose. The tables get wider as they get more expensive so that you can rip a 4' wide sheet of plywood with the excess on the outboard side of the blade. cross cutting long pieces on these is awkward if you don't have a sliding fence, and dangerous if your piece gets bound against the rip fence - they tend to go airborne at high velocity.

I agree that a contractor saw should work fine - I would also suggest putting a clamp on the back end of the fence to secure it to the saw table and prevent any flexing as you're pushing the long boards to rip the strips.
