Be warned: Installing "robust" mailbox posts can open you up to huge liabilities.

Mailbox posts are designed to be breakable for a reason. If a vehicle exits the road and hits the mailbox the post should bend or break away. By installing solid, unyielding posts (ie steel or concrete) you've created a road-side hazard in the Right of Way. Doing so makes you liable for any damage or personal injuries.

For State and Federal roads the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) requires posts be constructed using a 4x4 wood or 3" aluminum post (or other approved systems).

Just a few thoughts on mail box posts from a NHDOT Construction Engineer...
