I don't think you want to flip the fence to the other side as that could bind your strips between the fence and the blade, which could result in the strip shooting out at high velocity (you DO NOT want to be on the receiving end of that. this also reduces the clearance you have to feed the strip through when you get to the end.
In addition to the featherboard pushing the strip against the fence, I would also clamp a featherboard to the fence to hold the strips down as you feed them through.
You have two options for the zero clearance insert - these are readily available for under $30 and would be a worthwhile investment, or you can make one out of plywood. with either one, the idea is to retract the blade fully, put in the insert, move the fence so that it is clamped to the rail and over the insert (but not over the blade), and then slowly raise the blade through the insert.
