I would also suggest that when ripping the strips to use a splitter to keep the board from binding the back edge of the saw blade. This will also keep the strip up against the fence and keep that from flexing out against the blade.

To those of you who have made a few of these boats - I'm assuming that when the strips are being cut, that the fence is set to a 1/4" cut (or however thick you want the strips) and that you're pulling them out on the back side once you feed the end of the board through the saw, as opposed to adjusting the fence for each pass through the saw.
