Recently I've encountered a problem with sanded fiberglass weave on the nose bow of the boat. It was necessary to sand into the weave to get the surface even with the nose of the baidarka. The problem is that the exposed weave won't wet out when resin is applied. I experimented with heating the area and applying resin but it just won't soak in. (I wiped off the resin after the experiment) There appears to be no contamination of 'pulling back' of the resin. I used some purple heart for accent strips and the bow and wondering if the oils in the wood are part of the problem although resin adhesion is good.

I don't know how, but the glass shows classic stress damage. Heat from the sanding, stress in the deck, a heat source allowing pent up stress to release, but the glass must be removed, it will not disappear with a finer grit.

Sand or use a heat gun to remove the damaged glass, then patch using all the methods I outlined for a transparent lay-up.
