I'm planing a build (different design) and to keep it light, using all wood hatch covers. I have used VCP hatches for years and i think the obsession about flush hatches (I have done it too) is counter-productive in obvious ways. Keeping a lip higher where the lid connection is made is just an automatic water proof design vs creating a well for water to gather. I'm going to try to make a nice looking cover that is proud of the surface rather than creating a well. Theoretically, a well design has water in it constantly, just inviting a leak.

Or, how about a well (flush) design with a tiny drain tube keeping the well dry.

Anyhow, I am going to go with a lip above the deck since about 90% of commercial boats are doing that these days anyhow and I think it can be made to look nice. That lip only has to be a fraction over the deck to work and not a big appendage like VCPs and those types.
