You'd want to add extra glass under the deck if you do that or you'll create a stress point where the stresses will build up, eventually causing a possible fracture of the deck.

Also the strips could get pretty thin if that "drain" was carried all the way to the edge of the deck where they are ground down.

I've got those drains, though single ones, similar to what Rob has, also allows your fingers to more easily grasp the edge of the hatch lid to make it easier to lift it.
