It will always come down to that seal.Water just loves to get into your hold and to hope that a rise (or fall)of a quarter of an inch or so will discourage it will end in disappointment.I noticed on my flush day hatch,which is between my legs,that water accumulated inside in proportion to the number of times I accessed it.the seal works but the well of water (I use spacers also)is allowed to fall in when ever I break the seal.I soon learnt to thump the hatch so splashing most of the water out before opening it.or I would do a moment of railing.If you are willing to have an upstanding hatch,I suggest a coaming like arrangement that you then fit a sprayskirt arrangement over it then put the wooden hatch "cover" on.I know this is bomb proof.just my thoughts from Paul.
