The rudder support is a little different from most other rudder mechanisms I have seen extends below the "T". Does anyone know what the purpose of the lower part is?

Turning with the rudder puts sideways force on the blade which makes it want bend off to one side. The "T" needs to absorb this force and direct it to the stern of the boat to make it turn. The lobes sticking down are there to help handle the force. The dimensions of the plates above the "T" are small compared to some other rudder systems, so the lower bits make up for it.

Use my design as a starting point. It is a 20 year old design for me. I'm sure it can be improved upon.
