Doug G - appology - maybe

Doug,

I probably do owe everyone an apology, due to my tone.

But I really did have a question.

Why did you say 33 degrees?
"Both layers of glass if there are two should be orientated at 33 degrees or so. Since we are typically talking balanced cloth (warp and fill) this puts all yarns of glass opposing each other across the grain at different orientations to the grain and them selfs."
You are certainly correct that this puts all yarns of glass at different orientations to the grain - is this actually the goal - does this increase strength in some desired direction better than +/- 45?
What do you mean by "opposing" each other. Which direction is opposing the other - again is this desirable?

"I guess at an orientation of 90 and 0 deg. First layer and 45,-45 second layer is ok, just the initial at 0deg to the grain isn't doing much work other than being there." So if you think the 0 degree is not doing anything thing, why put it in there at all. If you feel 2 plys are necessary why not both at +/-45?

To me it is clear that the most effective (added strength vs weight) orientation is 90 if you are trying to resist splitting the wood along the grain. You don't get the 90 without the 0 unless you are willing to talk about unidirectional fibers (as in my last post) except of course the 0 direction adds stiffness and strength to bending of the boat. Most boats have multiple goals with anything you use (glass, epoxy, etc).

Last clarification - I assume you are talking about both inside and outside laminates?

So my last question - I hope you DO respond to an actual question - is there anything wrong with the 1000 boats built with 0/90 cloth?

I am asking you to define what you are trying to fix with your post.
