Even 1/16 variation is 'huge' for strip thicknesses which will be in the 3/16-1/4" range, IMO.

For me, the two essentials for ripping are a good long outfeed table (really a safety issue) and a ripping fence which doesn't extend past the cutting teeth of the blade (also a safety measure as it prevents 99% of kickback problems with strips).
The outfeed table can be something temporary so that you can rip strips in the driveway or 'out back'. With an outfeed table (and preferably an infeed table as well) you can concentrate on keeping the stock against the fence 'by hand', so featherboards aren't absolutely necessary.

The ripping fence is clearly shown in this pic from Etienne Muller - notice that it is clamped to the regular fence so that it can be fore-aft adjusted for varying stock thickness.
