Rob-
Do you prefer flat-grain or vertical grain on the visible surface of your strips?
The big advantage of the 'traditional' way of cutting strips is that most of the boards (and most of the cheaper boards) in the yard will show flat grain on the face and vertical grain when sawn into strips.
Do you put your 3/4" boards through the surface planer, or is the sawn width and surface good enough for gluing?

I'm using mostly expensive western red cedar. These boards tend to be cut from large trees so vertical grain on broad board faces is common. On the hull sides I will choose more vertical grain, on the deck I'm looking for inspiration so anything goes. When you've looked through thousands of board feet of WRC you'll find there are some amazing wood colors and grains possible. With that in mind, I say, I'm looking for inspiration.

WRC in 3/4" thick boards are of a finished size of 5/8" thickness planed on three sides, so one broad face is usually somewhat rough. With a thin kerf blade I can get three strips at a thickness of 5mm from a 3/4" piece laid on it's side. One strip face will be a little rough but can be faced to the interior.

Depending on the thickness of the boards more waste is possible than cutting all the strips off one edge, but the wood is what these boats are all about. It doesn't cost a lot more, or take a lot more time in project this large, to make the difference between a good looking boat and a great one!

I'll run boards or strips through the thickness planer for my "museum quality" boats only.
