The first couple of kayaks I used the saturated roll of tape. It was very frustrating, especially trying to convince the roll to go around the corner at the bow and stern.

Since then I have glued the tape in place before fitting the deck on the hull. It has been much easier and much more reliable.

It only takes a tiny drop of hot glue every 100mm or 150mm to hold the tape in place. The dots are so small that they are invisible and certainly don't affect the strength. It also means that I know the tape is in place near the end of the bow where it isn't even visible from the cockpit.

In my experience, the dots of hot glue method is vastly superior with no disadvantages at all.
