For cutting strips I use a setup similar to Nick's: 3 hp cabinet saw and a power feeder. If I cut strips I make an operation out of it and cut enough for at least two kayaks.

One additional thing is I gang-rip my strips. I use three 7-1/4" thin kerf blades separated by spacers. Do NOT try this without a power feeder. You need the feeder to pull the strips through the blades, preventing kickback. With this setup I can cut enough strips for two kayaks in about 90 minutes. With gang ripping the middle strips are very uniform (within 1/64"). Any variation is limited to the strip against the fence. Even then those are within a 1/32". I've never planed a strip post cutting and don't see any reason to.
