Actually, no, the grass is not greener with a shear clamp.

The shear clamp was started with early Chesapeake designs and works good on hard chine boats where the deck meets the hull at a fairly strong angle (and flat on the back). You would just epoxy on a 3/4 x 3/4 pine strip and with a block plane angle the clamp and boat side to meet the deck. You would slap on some thickened epoxy and use bronze ring nails and nail the deck to the clamp with a bit of overlap that you would trim later. It was primitive boat building but it worked well. It solved the problem of getting far into the ends of the boat where you can't reach. I did a few boats that way and surprisingly, the bronze ring nails hardly show because they seen to blend in to the Okoume plywood color. My brother still has a Chesapeake Cape Charles 17 that I still take out for a paddle every now and then. 24" x 17' No glass on the outside (just epoxy) and it's held up fine.
