On some boats having a station "float" will work, not on all boats though.

I agree. 'Floating' a station - letting the wood, rather than the designer, determine the boat shape - is not something I'd do.
It might work with designs that are 'canoe-like' (no concave or flattened sections, end-to-end symmetrical, etc.) but not on more complex hull shapes. Add into the mix a curvy deck design and you really need to get the forms in the place the designer intended - sometimes helped in their job with intermediate forms, flat cockpit form, etc.
Bjorn Thomasson's designs like the Njord, Frej,Panthera are good examples of this -as mentioned.
Closer form spacing can reduce the risk a bit.
OT: Here's another shape that has a lot 'going on' - where I'd hesitate to float a form- not built in strip (yet?) though...
