The only time I use a squeegee on epoxy is on the inside to remove excess liquid that tends to pool in the bottom of the boat. Otherwise I feel it causes more problems than it solves. I roll and tip the epoxy and the varnish btw, covers a lot of area very quickly and leaves a nice smooth surface to work on.

This assumes you have a fairly warm shop, otherwise, specially with varnish, it dries too slowly and can cause runs.

Rubbing out the varnish works great if you have the patience to do it and can let the varnish sit long enough to completely dry before you start.
