With more suitable boats you will actually want to develop your range, skill and fitness. For the use you are describing I wouldn't waste even little money on the 10 ft boats.

For yourself, something around 17 ft. For your wife, 15 to 17 ft.

Get something with a definite v shape in the ends of the hull at the stem and stern. Not something with ends that are more cone shaped. The cone shapes won't track well.
