If you want to use the ROS for easy shaping, get the higher powered model.
Home Depot sells a Porter cable that pulls 1.4A, but the one I use looks the same but uses 3A or about twice the power. Doesn't bog down, doesn't heat up, and as Rob says is easily used to level the inside of the boat except where the bow or stern just won't let it fit in.I was somewhat puzzled by everyone saying it could/ should only be used for finishing. Then I realized I had the higher power model.
My ROS is 2 Amp. Lightweight, and easy to use for a long time on sanding interior curved and vertical surfaces.
A larger 6" disk, high power, heavy tool is what we've been led to believe is the best choice.
Tim Allen and "Home Improvment" not withstanding, the ideal ROS is 5" and light weight.
Disk speed, and a light touch work best, most aggressively, WITH the right grit.
Ever start a ROS off the wood? What happens? Spins fast. And when you place it on the wood is cuts aggressively before you press hard and slow it down.
Got it? Don't press hard. Hold it lightly even lifting it off the wood to keep revs high and cutting aggressive with the right grit. Holding the ROS lightly will also make the strip surface guide the sander keeping the surface fair.
After my first smaller ROS died I bought the new improved "replacement" model which was bigger, heavier, and higher powered.
I've used it twice. Once when I first bought it, and then again, when I wanted to remember just how heavy and awful it was to use the first time.
