Ever start a ROS off the wood? What happens? Spins fast. And when you place it on the wood is cuts aggressively before you press hard and slow it down.

Not all ROS are created equal. While my trusty old Porter Cable spins up when off the material and slows down when pressed down, my new Festool runs the same speed regardless of the pressure. I was very reluctant to spend the money on the Festool, but it probably cut my sanding time in half.

I do the light-touch sanding thing with my Porter Cable and other sanders, but it doesn't have the same effect with the Festool, I can just let the weight of the tool do its thing.

Many ROS sanders come with a heavy-duty rubber o-ring looped between the motor housing and the disk pad. This ring is intended to keep the pad from spinning fast, this also helps engage the full "random orbit" action. However, this ring often breaks fairly quickly and then the free spin situation happens.
