Thanks all for the input. And I have to correct my original posting- as Nick points out the book has an entire chapter/appendix on the ins,outs, and pitfalls of resizing plans. I based my original question off of a few lines in Ch. 2 that said the Auk "can" be resized down (I believe it says as far as 10'- I don't have the book in front of me) or up (say, for a double) just by changing the placement of the forms.
After reading the appendix and your comments I see that the fact that you "can" do this doesn't necessarily make it a good idea.
An estimated 30% loss in stability would run counter to my intentions for going smaller. I think for now I'll focus my kayak build daydreaming on the solo microbootlegger instead.
