Thanks for your product suggestions John.

There was originally some kind of sealant that seemed like silicone caulk to me. I took the leaky hatches up soon after acquiring the kayak and the original seal was just a thin bead (it was even an incomplete bead on one hatch), so I figured I'd re-do it with a bunch of silicone, enough for a generous squeeze-out which I filleted between the rim and deck. It did work well for a couple months, but soon let go of the deck/rim.

Yes, the flat panels are always going to be flexy. I don't put any big loads on them like a loaded kayak rescue, but even sitting over the aft bulkhead to enter, or slapping over a good wave apparently is enough to break the silicone away from the deck flange or rim.

It looks like a solvent is definitely in order.
