Yep, held on by friction and the straps that are beyond the center (widest) part of the boat. Have traveled many thousands of miles with boats held on exactly that way, no problems ever.
Bow and stern lines are safeties, if something were to go wrong, they keep the boat on the roof.
I buy my straps from the rack companies (yakima etc), they are more rugged than need be, but worth the extra cost, not had one break yet.
