I just tried using peel ply over a straightforward hand layup, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the result: the surface was completely smooth, no need for fill coats, and it was much easier to both see if there were any starved areas and also work the more awkward areas at the stems.

Most importantly, it was really easy to squeegee off all excess resin, without any worries over the glass shifting or snagging, and bridging also seemed to be easier to avoid, although I have only done one hull exterior.

I have also been looking at vacuum infusion, but the high cost of the consumables to do the whole kayak put me off a bit, although I will definitely use it for coaming rims and hatch lips.

However it occurred to me to try peel ply over a hand layup, and the results were great, I really recommend trying it.
