I made a horrible botch of my first boat with strings and plumb bobs.

Borrowed a laser and it was very easy.

I have the typical self leveling unit with both vertical and horizontal modes.
You must have a set of consistent waterlines and centerlines on each mold.
I use the Schade style 2x4 internal support.

First I set the level on a convenient shelf about 3 feet above the boat.
Line up the boat and or level where you get the laser line on the first mold past the end plate on each end. Mark the centerline for those on the beam or set blocks to keep the alignment.
Line up all the rest of the forms marking centerline or setting up blocks to prevent side to side movement.
Take down the laser and put it on a tripod to the side of the boat 3 to 4 feet away.
Get a basic alignment on two stations, one front and one aft. This always requires shimming the support for the 2x4 first to get it close for me.
I typically put a tapered shim between the top of the beam and the 2x4 hole in the station mold. This is to give you room to adjust the rest of the molds.
Now use the upper shims on all the molds to get the waterlines even on one side.
Check to see that the two molds are level by raising the laser until it is higher than the 2x4 beam. measure from the laser beam to the waterline. Adjust any tilt you find on the two
Then go back and adjust all the molds in waterline. This should take out any horizontal tilt.
Put the laser back on the shelf to check the centerline. At this time I screw blocks into the forms (but not the 2x4 beam - this sets your centerline.
Now go back to the tripod from the side and adjust any height problems with the waterline. Now screw the previously installed blocks into the 2x4 beam. Make another check of the centerline and then the horizontal, if you are as paranoid as I am.
I then install a temporary strip on each side at the waterline. There is always something that is not quite right. I release that form from the 2x4 and let the waterline strips pull the form into alignment.

Finally I'm done and very confident about starting.

For me that gives more confidence than string. Good luck.
