On skegs- lots of good info already.
To most folks, 'keel strip' is just extra protection against abrasion.
Another possibility to consider-along with rudder or aft skeg, depending on the boat design/behaviour, is a 'skeel', like the ones Reg Lake designed for the Sterling boats.
It's a skeg just aft the cockpit, so it improves tracking without such a big change in fore-aft 'balance' in wind. Some boats (with strong weathercocking) need the skeg aft, though.
