I don't like foam rollers for varnish, they leave too many bubbles. There are now premium microfiber roller covers available that work really well. I cut mine down from a 9" roller cover to 3 - 3" covers and use a trim roller handle, does the small areas of a kayak easier than using a wider one. You need to carefully get rid of any fuzz or lint after you cut the roller covers though.
