Joel,

I encourage you to use just strips of cedar for the raised frames.
Plywood will be a bitch to bend and keep in one piece, unless it is so thin there is no point.
Mine were only about 1/2" total lamination, no glass, etc., and it was strong enough to put my entire big butt on it without a creak.
As far as I remember I used about 1/8" strips. They were 1"+ (maybe 1.5") wide.
