Joel,

No need for steam, I'm not that sophisticated. I just thin down the strips until they will fit the geometry I want. These were glued with epoxy since I wanted to assure the strength.
Occasionally I've used 1/32" plys for severe bends. Those I just wet with a spray bottle, clamp in place. They are dry and formed the next day.

I liked using the original design frame with a block because I could see and trust that I would get the final top piece to the shape and place I wanted. This mod was built by eye, not by plan.
If you are more sophisticated you probably could build it off to the side, but since the frame is 1/2" and the cap 1"+ you still have to work to get it properly fitted.
