When I did mine, I wanted the maximum height for my old knees to go thru the #4 frame. Still using the 1/2 ply 1" in width would cost me height.
Laminated strips are also a lot stronger than ply on edge, especially when you add additional ply for increased strength (trying to account for extra weight).
Laminated strips seem to be lighter, stronger, and more clearance. Besides I like laminating.

I've actually thought about laminating the complete frame - haven't done it yet.
