Learn to use a trucker's hitch, I'm not great at describing knots, but there are several good sites online, it's the best way to get rid of extra strap/line length when you're using straps/lines for securing a boat.

Years ago was helping a friend with his small river marina launching boats, had a 24' pontoon boat on the fork truck (BIG fork truck) and had a hanging line tied to the bow of the boat, ended up under the fork truck's tires and pulled the several thousand pound boat off the side of the forks.

Always secure your lines, under a vehicle's tire have amazing pulling power.
