Has anyone tried a rack which slides on the roof rails, drops down the side of the vehicle where the kayak can be loaded and secured then lifted and pushed on to the roof?

Harken used to make a gizmo called the "Magic Box".

It was a block and tackle kept organized and protected in an aluminum box. It was available in 6:1 and 8:1 forms in lengths up to about 2 feet long. The only place I ever saw one used was as the spinnaker halyard for a Fireball racing dingy. It was reversed to a 1:6 ratio with a T-handle. After rounding the weather mark the skipper of this 2-man boat would reach down, grab the T-handle, and throw his weight onto the handle, raising the chute in about 1/10 of a second. Tré cool! The halyard was all organized for the douse.

I'll bet some variant of the Magic box could be used in your rack system.
