Paddling in Wind

You are right, in that we found a tacking approach worked for us in the end. Once we were about 45 or 50 degrees off the wind the effects became manageable, and then back upwind again to regain all the lost ground. We also needed to leave plenty of room to windward of the point, because the rocks there are sharp and nasty, and we needed room for a possible rescue. If we had been weaker paddlers we may as well have just gone home

As the wind increases there becomes a point where there are essential two viable points of sail for a kayak: Dead up wind and due down wind. Up wind, slight ferry angles to the wind can help move you across the wind, albeit arduously. Downwind you may not be able to do more than err a bit in desired direction relative to the wind and incorporate some sort of tacking to get to where you need to go. But high winds are inevitably a challenge in a human powered boat.
