Thats a good point Mike.

Plus, the beauty of some of these woods is grain and hardness characteristics. If walnut was being used for a musical instrument or a decorative box or small table where the grain would be highly appreciated along with the hardness characteristic it would make strong sense. I think the same general effect can be easily happen with dark cedar. I buy some crappy WR cedar at Depot and just make small strips around knots and scarf to get a dark wood. It's usually heart wood that's very dark and often has a super grain.

That ying/yang deck posted is about color not grain or hardness. Shaun, if you have the wood and want to use it then do it but if the idea is a light weight boat, that happens with an accumulation of good choices: light woods, thin woods. thin glass, not much epoxy. light hatch covers and hatch bases and on and on.

Plus, not sure what you meant that stain bleeds?
