I've used american walnut on a couple of boats for accent lines and it lightens over time until there is not much variation with medium dark cedar.

The peruvian walnut goes darker as it ages. For contrast it is the best I have found, but it is almost impossible to get here in Ireland. The little I have I am very mean with, but that possibly helps with the end result. Using thinner accent strips can result in a more elegant job sometimes.

The boat on the left american walnut accents after a few years...you can see it below the sheer, and it is also under the perimeter lines.

The boat on the right is peruvian after a few years. It is still very obvious.
