Can you try to get a picture that shows the twist? Agree with John ...Please do not donate of sell cheaply to get rid of it. If you were near NH I would take a crack at it.
The idea of fixing by what ever method and painting is just fine.
Did you say it is an Outer Island? I built one and it is one of the most enjoyable and prettiest kayaks around. Well worth the time and think of all you will learn :)
