I think it is the Aleut equivilent to modern hot-rodding of a car.

I would be shocked if this didn't have something to do with it. Some people feel the Aleut were so focused on survival/efficiency that they didn't have time to gussy up their boats. But, I find that theory de-humanizing. No matter how close to the edge people have lived, they always showed the ability to express themselves aesthetically.

Bidarkas are beautiful kayaks, while form does follow function, I don't think it would be fair to the Aleut to eliminate "hot-rodding" as one of the influences on their design.

Creative expression can also cause happy improvements in performance in the same way functional necessity can be aesthetically pleasing.
