From the little I've read these were intended to be loaded in use, so I would suspect they carried ballast when they weren't loaded so they'd sit on their lines.

Again, it is hard to know. There are reports of ballast being used, but all the contemporary illustrations I have seen show bidarkas with their bows overhanging the water quite a bit. So, even properly loaded, I think is safe to say, the bifurcation was intended to be above the water most of the time. And again, the bifurcation can only effect performance in the water to the extent that it gets wet.

The question then becomes, what conditions will get the bifurcation wet, and what will their effect when this happens.
