I should have added that since my feet are usually more like 60° (vs 90°) angle to the keel, that the 'flat' drawing exaggerates the problem of tight fit.
I know that in squirt boats (and some Greenland boats?) the 'pointey toes' technique is used. However, I wouldn't like to face a long slog without a good comfortable foot position.

In more 'surf-ski' shaped boats, with a footboard (rather than pegs), there can be possibilities for more foot positions. It certainly makes paddling with 'knees in the middle' more comfortable if I can move my toes to the mid-line (as I can in my Panthera).
