I wasn't able to see the pictures in the album earlier, but I just looked at them. This is definitely the most poorly constructed boat I've encountered and these are just the defects that you can see! The most troubling part is that there are so many areas where there are obvious voids (air pockets) between the glass and the gelcoat. The evidence is that the gelcoat is gone, but there is no damage to the underlying glass, indicating that there was never any bond between them. This was caused by "bridging" in tight curves (like the deck edge) when the chopped glass was sprayed into the mold after the gelcoat (NDK used "chopper guns" to build their boats and may still do so). Apparently, no effort was made to push/roll the fiberglass into the curves, as is typically done when a boat is constructed with fiberglass mat or cloth.

The mention that the hull was "soft" under the seat probably means that the original layup was pulverized in use and the patch is the only thing providing structural integrity. The multitude of bubbles above the seam means that the whole deck is probably riddled with voids along the edge. You could try to knock all of the loose gelcoat out and fill the voids, but you're looking at a huge amount of filling and sanding that will probably add several pounds of weight to what is probably already a heavy boat. In the end, you'll still have a boat with very questionable structural integrity.

My personal opinion is that this boat was a disaster before it ever left the factory and attempting to fix it would be pouring money down a rat hole. Do yourself a favor and run away!!!

BTW, the cam cleat and fairlead on the aft deck were for the skeg that was removed. They may be the only salvageable parts of this pig. ;)
