I doubt that you'll get the tension you need without lacing it up like Tom did, although I could be wrong. I built 3 of my own design that was based off of Tom's techniques. Unless you are building a folder, there is no real reason that I can see to use this method of construction. And even if you are making a folder, it takes so long to assemble/break down, it's really too much trouble for quick paddle trips.

If you look at my website, you'll see that I kind of gave up on those materials and went straight to wood frame and nylon skin.
