Thanks again Bill!
Thinking about the process in my head - would it go like this?:
- Assemble the stations, frame, bow and stern plates and first layer of the cockpit combing
- Flip boat so it is hull side up
- Put seam tape on the outside edges of the gunnels
- Stretch the dacron as tight/snug as possible for the hull first - the edges would stick to the tape on the gunnels
- When satisfied with the stretching, push hard along the edge of the dacron to tape on the gunnels
- trim excess dacron on the edges
- flip boat over and apply another layer of tape to the outside edge of the gunnels that were just covered by the dacron from the hull
- apply dacron to the deck in the same way as the hull and secure it to the tape on the gunnels
- reinforce the dacron seam between the deck and hull with contact cement
- flip boat over so it is hull up
- using a dry iron start at the lowest temp and shrink the dacron until snug, but not too tight - increase temp until desired result, but not over 350 degrees F
- flip boat over and shrink the dacron on the deck
- flip boat over so hull is up again
- apply a thin layer of epoxy to the dacron on the hull with a brush and squeegee a little beyond the gunnels
- after the epoxy is cured, drape over the fiberglass cloth over the hull, but don't tape it (unless its sliding around alot)
- apply epoxy to the fiber glass with brush and squeegee, but stop and inch or so before the gunnels
- allow the epoxy to cure
- cut the fiberglass to be even with the gunnels
- apply epoxy to the fiberglass along the gunnel edge that has not yet been coated yet
- allow epoxy to cure
- flip boat over so it is deck side up
- apply a thin layer of epoxy to the dacron on deck with a brush and squeegee a little beyond the gunnels
- after the epoxy is cured, drape over the fiberglass cloth over the deck, but don't tape it (unless its sliding around alot)
- apply epoxy to the fiber glass with brush and squeegee, but stop and inch or so before the gunnels
- allow the epoxy to cure
- cut the fiberglass to be even with the gunnels, but slightly overlaps the fiberglass of the hull
- apply epoxy to the fiberglass along the gunnel edge that has not yet been coated yet
- allow epoxy to cure
- using seam tape, attach a 1"-2" nylon webbing around the boat to cover the seam between the hull and deck - apply epoxy to the webbing afterwards
- attach the cockpit combing to the first layer of the combing now underneath the dacron/fiberglass
- cut away dacron/fiberglass inside of combing
- grind/sand inside combing until smooth, then apply epoxy over the entire combing
- 2-4 layers of varnish or paint over the entire exterior of the kayak
- install deck rigging (I know non-traditional for a greenland kayak - but I really like deck lines)
-- not quite sure how to best do this step - drill holes into the aluminum stringers, and use blind rivets to for the line eyelets?
--Take on water and enjoy?
