Well technically basswood is a hardwood, but it's a very soft one. Purple heart on the other hand is an extremely hard one, so what Paul said applies. Oh yeah if you've not used purple heart don't be surprised when it turns tan color when it's cut, wait for a while and it'll turn purple again. It's sort of burgundy color under most epoxy which tends to be amber in color.

Any of the Japanese pull saws work excellent for working with strips, far easier than the traditional american saws.
