Thank you Nick and Bill for your reply, I have One more question, When I installed the bulkheads to my Night Heron I ached for at least a week from all the contorted positions I had to work in. My question is 1: should I install the skeg in the rear hatch area where it is comfortable to work on, Or should I cut the deck off from the hull with those dremmil type saws and place the skeg in the right place. The second option is a lot of work which I don't mind doing just don't know what might lie in wait to bite me. Nick R.

As Bill stated, the skeg will improve tracking just about anywhere between the seat the tail end of the boat, so major surgery to place it far in the back is not justified. From a practical standpoint, I would put it in immediately behind the hatch area so it is not directly in the hatch, but is still easy to reach. This keeps the hatch area storage intact but saves your aching back.
