What is your goal with the keel strips?

To keep the boat from tipping over. Bad idea?

I'm also thinking I could glue under each edge (where the deck and hull meet) a 3' or so tube of closed-cell foam, as a sort of inboard outrigger. That way if I start to tip to one side, the foam tube will prevent it. I'm no physicist, so I don't know if the flotation power of the foam would be enough. I saw one guy on YouTube made outriggers out of crab floats, so I could always try that if the foam doesn't work.

I also thought of using bamboo for an outrigger extension and/or the floats themselves. It's such an amazing material and easy to find around here. And it would match the boat! I'd just have to watch out for aquatic pandas.

Re. the keel: one idea I had would be to use silicone caulk to mount the keel to the hull, so that it could be removed later if need be. It would probably leave a mark, but it would be less permanent than using epoxy or marine glue to mount it.

Something tells me you're now shaking your head in appalled incredulity.
