You can certainly plane the rough side, but you could also just leave it, if you're using cove and bead it'll be removed milling the sides removing the roughness and if you are using the rolling bevel you'll be planing that side anyway so doesn't matter if it's rough, it's a tiny thin rough side once the strips are cut.
