Most race boats use rudders of some sort and often with a tiller instead of moving pedals. The tiller is a stick between your feet that you can nudge with your feet to turn, obviously cable operated. Then you can just concentrate on paddling and keeping it upright.

I doubt the sponsons will do much, they'd need to be at the widest part of the boat to be of any use and this will restrict paddling. A simple strap on out rigger with pool noodle floats will keep it upright (training wheels) and once you don't need them anymore they can be easily removed. Once you paddle it more you'll get to the point you won't want nor need them.

Thanks for the thoughts, Bill. Re. the sponsons, I'd imagined putting them along either side of the cockpit at the top edge of the hull--which is the widest part. Given that the boat is only 19" wide, do you really think another 2" or so on either side would restrict paddling? (The Coho is 23" wide, and I have no problems paddling her.)

As she is now, I was able to keep her upright on a relatively calm pond--but if I can't get her stable enough to take her on the Potomac, in a stiff breeze and 2' waves, this boat will be useless to me.
