I'm curious where you're paddling on the Potomac that you're seeing 2 foot waves. I've never seen anything close to that on the sections I've paddled.

Just west of Hains Point, coming from Gravelly Point. It was a windy morning. Maybe they weren't quite 2'--I'm relying on memory here--but they were enough to lift the bow so that it crashed down. Not whitecaps, though.

IThat said, I think what you're likely to find, even with sponsons, is weathercocking if you get any significant current in that thing. I could be wrong since I can't view the hull well and I'm no designer but my 19' 19" beam boat has that as the primary issue when I'm on the water. Works beautifully on the Potomac and everywhere else once you get used to it though.

As for the sponsons themselves, I suspect you'll find comfort very quickly in it if you've already paddled it without getting wet. I doubt you'll need them for very long. I'd use just pool noodles that are strapped around the coaming and just hit the water to the sides of the cockpit, personally. It shouldn't interfere with your paddling at all and then you don't have to worry about too much drag from the straps.

Well, I was on Roaches Run--so it's pretty calm there. Maybe I'll try the noodles. Or pursue the idea of converting her to a rowing shell. Much to ponder.
