Actually this is not true at all. Most rowing shells are round bottom with no chines. Regardless, your kayak would likely make a pretty decent rowing shell. Over all, it is a bit short, but it would work. You would probably need to extend the cockpit to fit the sliding seat.

Thanks much, Nick. Once again, I'm surprised but glad to learn my preconceived notions were in error! Extending the cockpit would be way easier than trying to make it smaller, especially since my woodworking skills entail pencil sharpening and that's about it.

The only problem is that the outrigger/seat kits go for around $700--and meanwhile, I'm seeing Annapolis Wherrys on Craigslist for about that much, and you get the boat as well. I don't know if the wife will put up with a third boat, but even if so, I'd still have the problem of what to do with this weird skinny boat.

(I've realized I can't call it the "loon" boat, lest people think it's from Laughing Loon. And I now realize I shouldn't have referred to it as the "mystery boat," because some people may have initially thought I meant the Guillemot Mystery. I would love to have one of those!)

I suppose I could just make this one my "calm day" boat, even on the Potomac.
